Forgive me

At school recently, the small guy and his classmates had a go at writing poems in different styles, using models written by great modern poets. The small guy felt a particular affinity with the example he read by William Carlos Williams, and wrote this in homage.

This is just to say

I have put
a rat
in
your bed

in which
you were
probably going
to sleep

Forgive me
you said
you liked
animals

That is one entertaining poem.

I particularly like the putting back of responsibility on to the one in whose bet the rat has been put, which is rather different from what Williams does.

I can see that we older poets are going to have to shape up considerably. Hail to the new generation!
