Dragnet

'Sometimes there's a good feed of whitebait coming through, sometimes nothing comes through for a couple of months -- it doesn't prevent you from going down with your whitebait net and trying to catch a few whitebait.'

Venerable Wellington art dealer Peter McLeavey -- who's seen a few seasons come and go from his Cuba Street stand -- on the vagaries of the art market. Quoted in The Press, 25-6 April 2009.

Seems you can take the boy out of Taranaki, but not the Taranaki out of the boy.

It's interesting when you think about it how much above its weight Taranaki punches when producing visual artists and other nationally-significant cultural figures. A quick think last night provided the following list but there's bound to be more:

Michael Stevenson
Terry Urbahn
Ronald Hugh Morrieson
K.D. Wasley
Rangi Kipa
Peter Peryer (by recent adoption)
Michael Smither
Felipe Tohi
Tom Kreisler

Looks like it's all blokes though. Any girls?

And via Twitter:

@tinks
Don Driver [How on earth could I forget the big guy? Whoops.]
Francis Upritchard [though Christchurch claims her proudly now]
Fiona Clark [also via @circa1969]
Christine Hellyar

So, you CAN take the girl out of Taranaki, etc.
